What Imām al-Ḥaddād Would Teach Children

Special supplications and verses from the Qurʾān that Imām al-Ḥaddād  would teach to the children for the purposes of protection and spiritual growth.

Imām al-Ḥaddād would teach children the following things

At sunset he would teach them to recite by pronouncing the following supplications, word for word:

ARABIC
أعوذ بكلمات الله التامات
من شر ما خلق
Transliteration
Aʿūdhu bikalimāt illāh it-tāmmāti
min sharri mā khalaq
English Translation

I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of God from any evil which He has created.

ARABIC
بسم الله الذي لا يضر مع اسمه شيء في الأرض ولا في السماء، وهو السميع العليم
Transliteration
Bismillāh illadhī lā yaḍurru
maʿ ismihi shayʾun fī-lʾarḍi
wa lā fīs-samāʾi
wa huwas-samīʿ ul-ʿalīm
English Translation
In the Name of God, with Whose Name comes no harm to those on the earth and in the heavens, and He is The All-Hearing, The Omniscient.
ARABIC
رضيت بالله ربا وبالإسلام دينا وبمحمد نبيا
Transliteration
Raḍītu billāhi rabbā,
wa bil-islāmi dīnā,
wa bi Muḥammadin nabiyyā
English Translation
Sufficiently pleased am I with God as my Lord, with Islām as my religion and Muḥammad as my Prophet.
ARABIC
يا حافظ يا حفيظ يا كافي يا محيط صلى الله على نوح وعلى نوح السلام
Transliteration
Yā Ḥafiẓu yā Ḥafīẓ
yā Kāfī yā Muḥīṭ
ṣall-Allāhu ʿalʿa Nūḥ
wa ʿalā Nūḥ as-salām
English Translation
O Protector, O Defender,
O Sufficer, O All-Encompassing One,
send prayers upon Nūḥ,
and upon Nūḥ may salutations be sent.

The first thing that the children are taught is how to pronounce is:

  • Allāh, Allāh
  • lā ilāha ill-Allāh
  • lā ilāha ill-Allāh Muḥammad rasūl-ullāh

He would then teach them to pronounce the following if they reach an age capable of understanding:

  • The Magnificent Opening Chapter of the Qurʾān [sūrat al-fātiḥa al-muʾaẓẓama]
  • The Verse of the Throne [āyat ul-kursī]
  • The Last Two Verses of the Chapter of the Cow [khawātīm sūrat al-baqara]
  • The Chapter of Sincerity [sūrat al-ikhlāṣ]
  • The Two Chapters of Refuge [al-muʿawwidhatayn, sūrat al-falaq wa sūrat an-nās] which are the Final Two Chapters of the Mighty Qurʾān
  • And other such shorter Chapters before they begin learning the Mighty Qurʾān with a teacher.
